Second, accept being from California is like the American Express card "accepted everywhere." When I travel in Europe I'm never from the United States. I'm from California, and the response I always get is the same. Smiling, happy to meet me, welcoming, with the first question being "Do I know Arnold Schwarzenegger?" Yep, sort of, my husband was part of the team when he was governor. That gets me good tables without reservations or into club. And last, our California speak, it's ours and don't take your red pen to it Mr/Mrs editor! Many of my heroines in my contemporary novels are from California because I'm a California girl.
So learn to embrace the word "The" and get over it. It's how we assign importance, connection, ownership here. A California girl would never say: "Take highway 101 to highway 46 to highway 5 to get to Sacramento." Highway is a tell of a non-native like wearing black socks with sandals! Here it's " Take THE 10 to THE 46 to THE 5." It's all about the "THE".
I don't say, "lets go to In & Out." I say: "Lets go to THE In & Out." Because that's my In & Out. Get it?
And don't add words at the end of my phrases. I don't say, " Go with me"; I say "do you want to go with?"
Now forget about all those stupid trends: Hecka, Hella, gnarly, tubular. Those are missteps of the young. Stick with cool its still cool here.
