Every time I drive on HWY 46 from the central valley to the coast of California I can't help think: this road is blood alley and James Dean died here. He was a truly fascinating and sexy actor, and that stretch of road an unspectacular place for his end. Dangerous and unpredictable, it still is a place of high traffic death. Maybe the dangerous and unpredictable stretch of road did make it apropos final destination for James Dean.
Complicated, mysterious, misunderstood, and a better actor than he was ever given credit for, I still remember his pat line: Live fast, die hard, leave a good looking corpse.
He was the rebel without a cause. I sort of appropriated his line, modified it, and use it as theme for me and my crazy book release project: I'm rebel without a clue. But that's OK. I don't think James will mind. He seemed the kind of man too cool to be bugged by anything.
